Rangers are stepping up their mass summer overhaul by working on a deal to sign Oldham defender George Edmundson, Football Insider understands.

Steven Gerrard’s side are keen to add the giant centre-back to their squad after already announcing three new arrivals ahead of the window opening as well as all but clinching a fourth.

An Ibrox source has told Football Insider that Edmundson, 21, has already spent time at Rangers’ training ground headquarters at Auchenhowie as they look to beat clubs south of the border to his signature.

English Championship clubs including Stoke City and Hull City are also eager to land the League Two ace, who is out of contract in the summer of 2020.

Rangers are convinced they can secure a deal for Edmundson for less than £1million as Oldham are braced for a bid.

Rangers are in the market for a new centre-back as loanee Joe Worrall heads back to parent club Nottingham Forest and they prepare to offload Gareth McAuley.

Rangers have already confirmed the permanent capture of Steven Davis and pre-contract deals for Kilmarnock winger Jordan Jones and Motherwell forward Jake Hastie.

As reported by Football Insider, the Glasgow giants have also agreed personal terms with Birmingham City playmaker Greg Stewart, who is set to sign a three-year contract as he joins on a free transfer.

In other Rangers news, it can be REVEALED that Steven Gerrard has given a defender at the club his marching orders after big development.
