Rasmus Hojlund responds to Romelu Lukaku’s message as Man United exit looms

Man United striker Rasmus Hojlund has responded to a message from Romelu Lukaku while his Old Trafford future hangs by a thread.

The 22-year-old was unable to help the Red Devils avoid their poor Premier League season last term, and scored just four goals in 32 top-flight outings.

Consequently, Ruben Amorim is keen to bolster his front line, while Hojlund appears set to leave Man United.

Meanwhile, Hojlund has been linked with Napoli, who won the Serie A title last season, largely thanks to the efforts of former Red Devils men Lukaku and Scott McTominay.

Hojlund responds to Lukaku’s ‘against all odds’ message amid Man United exit talk

Lukaku notched 14 goals and 10 assists in Serie A last term, spearheading Antonio Conte’s men towards the Italian top-flight title.

The Belgium international reflected on last season’s exploits via Instagram [16 June], as he wrote: “Against all odds. But we got the job done. All glory to God.”

Hojlund commented “Big Rom”, while Amorim wants Joshua Zirkzee to partner Viktor Gyokeres up front next season.

Football Insider verdict

Amorim could get more from Zirkzee next season

If Amorim sells Hojlund this summer, but retains Zirkzee as well as signing Gyokeres, Man United fans will likely be pleased by the former Sporting manager’s transfer business.

Zirkzee endured a lack of game time last term

Zirkzee scored even fewer goals than Hojlund in the Premier League last season, with three goals in 32 top-flight outings.

However, the Netherlands international was handed just 14 starts in the league last campaign, whereas the former Atalanta man was named in Amorim’s starting 11 on 23 occasions in the Premier League.

Furthermore, Zirkzee is capable of playing as both an out-and-out striker and an attacking midfielder, whereas Hojlund lacks such versatility.

Additionally, the Dutchman has just one Premier League season under his belt, while the Denmark international enjoyed significantly less success in his second campaign in English football than in his first.

Zirkzee could improve at Man United under Amorim’s stewardship next season, while Hojlund’s Old Trafford career has hit the end of the road.
