Rasmus Hojlund reacts to Man United announcement as Old Trafford exit looms

Rasmus Hojlund responded after Man United issued a new announcement amid rumours that the Danish striker is due to leave the Red Devils this summer.

Hojlund was unable to make much of a positive impact in his second season in Manchester, with just four goals scored in 34 league appearances after netting 10 in 30 league games in his debut campaign.

The striker was signed from Atalanta in 2023 for a fee of £72million [BBC], and has seen competition for places up-front arrive this summer after Matheus Cunha joined United from Wolves last month.

Hojlund is unlikely to still be at Old Trafford beyond this summer, as recently revealed to Football Insider by former chief scout Mick Brown.

Football Insider also revealed on 4 July that United’s move for Ollie Watkins hinges on Hojlund’s future with the Red Devils, and so with an exit likely, he has moved to respond to the club after a new announcement was made.

United announce a new shirt number for Diogo Dalot

The start of a new season always means that some players look to change their shirt numbers, and that is no different at United, with the club announcing on Instagram on Thursday, 10 July, that Portuguese international right-back Diogo Dalot has changed his number from 20 to 2, saying: “Say hello to United’s (new) no.2: (Diogo Dalot)!” with waving hand and red heart emojis.

Their message was reacted to by Hojlund, who left a like, while fellow exit-linked United man Andre Onana and new signing Cunha both followed suit.

Football Insider verdict

United’s 2024/25 campaign was one to remember for all the wrong reasons, as they finished 16th in the Premier League and were beaten in the Europa League final by fellow strugglers Tottenham.

Portuguese boss Amorim clearly has huge job on his hands to get the club to where they should be, but there is a feeling that they cannot get much worse, and letting Hojlund go makes sense as they aim to improve next season.

Hojlund’s United career stats

Cunha has recently joined United from Wolves, and United are close to sealing a deal for Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo, as revealed to Football Insider by former club scout Brown, so Hojlund is already likely to get much less game-time next season as it stands.

The Danish international has been linked with a move to Serie A champions Napoli in recent months, and that would be a great move for him to get his career back on track in a league and country that he is already familiar with.

Hojlund clearly does not have much of a future at Old Trafford, and despite showing glimpses of the talent that saw the Red Devils shell out a sizeable fee for his services two years ago, a move away from the club seems like the most realistic and viable option for him right now.
