Newcastle United star Isaac Hayden must be on England’s radar as the Three Lions look for midfield enforcers, according to Darren Bent.
The former Sunderland and England hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, says that Gareth Southgate and his team are “crying out” for a player like Hayden to do the dirty work in the middle of the pitch.
The 24-year-old was one of Newcastle’s standout performers during the 2018/19 campaign, emerging as a first-choice under Rafael Benitez and as a fans’ favourite at St James’ Park.
Bent says that he is surprised there are not bigger clubs sniffing around for his capture and insisted the former Arsenal man must be on the radar of the Three Lions after his performances.
Bent told Football Insider: “He did do really well in that defensive midfield role. He was one of those players that did well but really stepped up when they needed him. He was one there that really, really impressed me.
“He’s now one of the fans’ favourites, it’s brilliant news it looks like he’s staying. I’m surprised (the big sides aren’t looking at him). He’s English, he’s 24, if you look at the area for English players, we’re really crying out for someone in that midfield role for England.
“You’d think that he has to be in the discussion. His name could be mentioned. You think that he has another good season at Newcastle, he must be in the conversation.”
Hayden, who has three caps for England’s under-21 side to his name, played 28 times for Newcastle last season, establishing a promising partnership with fellow Englishman Sean Longstaff in the middle of the park.
He has a total of 95 Magpies’ appearances under his belt, 51 of which have come in the Premier League.
In other Newcastle United news, it can be REVEALED that the club are plotting to beat their Premier League rivals to the capture of an 18-goal forward.
