‘Really intelligent player’ - Noel Whelan raves about Leeds 25-year-old after Burton win

By Derek Smithson

Noel Whelan has heaped huge praise on Leeds United forward Pierre-Michel Lasogga after he enjoyed a dream debut against Burton on Saturday.

The 25-year-old lead the line superbly as the Whites recorded a convincing 5-0 home win at Elland Road to help them climb up to second in the Championship table.

Lasogga scored twice and assisted another two as the Yorkshire giants continued their unbeaten start to the season under Thomas Christiansen.

The striker opened the scoring with a shot from the edge of the box, before goals from Kalvin Phillips, Pablo Hernandez and Kemar Roofe put the hosts in complete control.

Lasogga then completed the rout with a headed goal in the second-half and went off to a huge reception in the 62nd minute.

Whelan was very impressed with the German on his Leeds debut and labelled him as a “intelligent player”.

“Lasogga today I think gave a fantastic performance, lead the line really well, brought people into play, really intelligent player and took his goals incredibly well,” Whelan told BBC Radio Leeds. “It looks like we’ve got a great striker on our hands here.”

Leeds only signed Lasogga on deadline day in a seasons-loan loan from German club Hamburg and has has shown he can score goals in the top flight.

The target man decided to make his first ever move to English football and has linked up with a side that are in brilliant form.

Christiansen’s side found their goalscoring boots against Burton and fans will hope that Lasogga can help fill the void left by Chris Wood.

Meanwhile, Leeds’ defence has been equally as impressive and they now have five consecutive clean sheets in the Championship.
