Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp was left drooling over Virgil van Dijk after he helped Liverpool keep a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw with Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday.
The Reds were frustrated by the Toffees in the Merseyside derby as they failed to follow up their demolition of Manchester City in midweek after Jurgen Klopp was forced into making several changes.
Van Dijk, 26, was one the players who managed to keep his place in the side and ex-Liverpool midfielder Redknapp was thoroughly impressed by his performance and how he has helped improve the Anfield rearguard.
“He’s a different class and he makes Liverpool’s back four really solid,” he said on Sky Sports’s live post-match coverage on Saturday.
“He’s changed their whole defensive look.”
Football Insider verdict
Van Dijk was always going to be a class act for Liverpool. His form has faltered at Southampton before he signed for the Reds in January but that was perhaps down to him playing for a manager who had no clue of how to set up a team and because he clearly wanted to leave. Everyone has been hailing Toby Alderweireld as being the best centre-back in the league, but at the moment, no one is coming close to van Dijk and if he had signed for Liverpool in the summer he would probably be a solid bet to be named in the team of the season. He will have a big job against Man City to ensure the Reds qualify for the semi-finals of the Champions League, but he will have no problems if he is able to preserve his form.
In other Liverpool news, the Reds are on the verge of signing an attacker from this second-placed club.
