Reece James ‘could leave after Josh Acheampong news’: Chelsea fans react

Josh Acheampong has left many Chelsea fans excited after Enzo Maresca provided an update on the right-back’s future at the club.

The 18-year-old has already made a handful of substitute appearances at first-team level for the club after coming through the youth ranks.

He has though, found himself out of contention at both senior and youth level recently amid talks about a new contract at Stamford Bridge for him.

That comes after Football Insider revealed last month that Liverpool are one of several clubs to have set their sights on Acheampong.

Many Chelsea fans though, have been desperate to see the right-back sign a new contract to secure his future in London, and it appears they are now about to get their wish.

Enzo Maresca hints at new Chelsea contract for Josh Acheampong

Speaking ahead of his side’s Europa Conference League clash with Kazakh side Astana on Thursday, manager Maresca revealed his side are now close to agreeing a new deal with Acheampong.

He also confirmed that the right-back is set to make his first start in senior football in that game, when the Blues look to make it five wins from five in the competition.

Taking to social media to react to that latest update, many Chelsea fans appeared delighted by the prospect of seeing much more of Acheampong in the both the near and long-term future.

Others though also questioned what this might mean for the future of their other right-back options, in particular Reece James, amid his recent injury struggles, with the hope that both can feature alongside each other but an acknowledgement that the captain’s fitness may mean he is ultimately set to move on.

Supporters hailed the “great news” as the club’s firm stance is seemingly about to prevail and secure the future of a talent deemed a greater prospect than Marc Guehi or Mason Mount.

In other news, Chelsea fans have predicted one first-team player will leave the club before the start of next season.
