Reliable journalist: Leeds pursued defender transfer as Championship rivals confirm deal

By Danny Wright

Leeds were looking to complete a permanent deal for Wolves defender Dominic Iorfa ahead of his loan move to Ipswich, according to a reliable journalist.

Former Radio Yorkshire presenter Joe Rawson claimed on his personal Twitter account on Friday that the Whites missed out on signing the 22-year-old because Wolves were only looking to send him out on loan.

The Yorkshire giants’ Championship rivals Ipswich confirmed on their official Twitter account on Friday that they had snapped up Iorfa on a season-long temporary deal, meaning that Leeds’ pursuit of the defender proved fruitless.

Iorfa will be linking up with former Wolves boss Mick McCarthy at Portman Road as the Tractor Boys look to launch a solid bid for promotion next season.

Leeds have not been afraid to secure new signings this summer under the new leadership of manager Thomas Christiansen and owner Andrea Radrizzani.

However many supporters believe that the defence is still an issue, and Iorfa would have perhaps been a top addition to their squad.

The former England Under-21 international, who can play at right-back or in the centre of defence, played a role in the Wolves first-team last season, making 25 appearances across all competitions and supplying one assist.

Football Insider Verdict

It seems strange that Wolves would want to send Iorfa out on loan as he is only going to get better season-by-season and is easily one of the best full-backs at Molineux. However manager Nuno Espirito Santo is probably making room for more new arrivals, as he looks to stamp his own authority on a squad that definitely underperformed last season under the charge of both Walter Zenga and Paul Lambert. Ipswich is a good move for Iorfa, but Leeds should be kicking themselves for missing out on him. They need defenders and Iorfa’s experience of the Championship and youth-level international football means he would have been a top addition to Christiansen’s thin defence.
