West Ham blow as summer target gets big-money offer worth £10.4m from PL rivals – reports

West Ham’s hopes of signing Jermain Defoe in the summer are hanging by a thread after Bournemouth have emerged as front-runners after making him a mega-money offer, according to a report.
The Mirror report that Bournemouth have offered Defoe a two-year-deal worth a minimum of £100k a week, with an option to extend.
BetVictor currently make the south coast club a short 1/5 to sign the prolific striker, with West Ham back at 8/1.
Former Arsenal and West Ham striker Ian Wright also claimed that he spoke to Defoe about the possibility of returning to East London and revealed that the 34-year-old was keen on the idea.

Both Bournemouth and West Ham have already enjoyed Defoe’s goalscoring prowess in the past.
Defoe joined the Cherries on loan from West in the early stages of his career and scored a total of 19 goals during the 2000/01 season.
He scored 29 in 94 appearances for West Ham.
It was revealed that Defoe can leave on a free transfer in the summer after Sunderland were relegated to the Championship for the first time in 10 years.
Following a spell playing for Toronto FC, Defoe returned to England and joined Sunderland in the 2015 January transfer window on a three year deal.
During his time at the club, the 34-year old has scored 37 goals in 91 appearances, in a struggling Sunderland side.
The England international has continued his form into this campaign but his 15 Premier League goals weren’t enough to save them this time around.
Matt Le Tissier recently claimed that West Ham should try and resign the English striker as he believes that he’d be good addition to the squad.
However, it looks like their Premier League rivals might be about to pip them to the post.
Football Insider verdict:
If Bournemouth do win the race for Defoe’s signature they’ll be picking up a player that is guaranteed goals in the Premier League. The £100k-a-week+ wages might seem like a lot but as they’d be picking him up on a free transfer, he’d be a bargain. The total would be £10.4million, which is below his market value. It will be a blow to West Ham, who were reportedly in the race to sign him. There’s a feeling that Defoe had unfinished business in east London following his previous spell there, and the Hammers need a solid striker who will be able to play for most of the season. The deal’s not done yet and anything can happen, but all the noises seem to be that Bournemouth are going to land their man.
