Celtic are in talks to sign Southampton defender Martin Caceres, according to a report.
The Sun claim that the Bhoys are in discussions with the the 30-year-old, who is available in the summer when his contract expires.
It is understood that Premier League side Leicester are also in talks with the centre-back and that he decided to quit Southampton to pursue regular football, with Watford also interested.
The report details that Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is looking to gather a squad that can reach the knockout stags of the Champions League next season, with the Scottish giants failing miserably this campaign.
Caceres has endured a difficult spell with the Saints since arriving in February and made just one senior appearance.
The Uruguay international is an experienced defender that has played for the likes of Juventus and Barcelona in his career, but was unable to force his way into contention in the Premier League.
Football Insider verdict:
Celtic should seriously considering swooping for Caceres in the summer as he would be a brilliant addition to the squad. The 30-year-old already has a great wealth of experience and would be available for a free transfer, with just his wages to cover. He has experience in the Champions League and won the competition with Barcelona in the 2008/09 season. Celtic could do with some more competition for places in the centre-back area and Caceres would definitely fit the bill. He is strong in the air, good in possession, and should be able to settle very quickly in Scottish football. His main attribute would be his European know-how as it’s an area Celtic currently seriously lack in.
