Championship clubs are eyeing young Newcastle midfielder Seaon Longstaff, according to a report.

The Daily Mail have claimed that several second tier sides are on alert with the 19-year-old’s contract at the club set to end this summer.

The teenager is currently on loan in Scotland’s top-flight with Kilmarnock where he has featured nine times in all competitions, returning two goals.

He has not yet made his senior debut for Newcastle, but he has featured 33 times for the Under-23s.

The young central midfielder is also considered a bright prospect and the report states that his future uncertainty at the north east giants is what has attracted clubs to himself.

Rafa Benitez is currently blessed in the central midfield ranks with Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden.

However, behind them is the often criticised Jack Colback and Newcastle may be keen to keep one of their academy graduates at the club to add more depth.

But, as the club looks for an instant return to the Premier League it may be even harder for Longstaff to see first team football and a move away could be for the best of his career.

Football Insider verdict:

As mentioned, Newcastle are already blessed with two central midfielders who are good enough to play in England’s top-flight. Longstaff is unlikely to be good enough to displace either of those two having not yet made his senior debut at the age of 19. Additionally, the quality of the Premiership is a tough way to decide how good he is due to the low quality of the league. The Magpies may be best off letting this youth player depart on a free in the summer and while it could end up biting them in the future, they have the option of adding some quality first team players to their midfield in the summer and years to come.
