Tottenham will face no challenge from European giants Barcelona in the hunt for Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah as they hope to snap up Toby Alderweireld in the summer, according to a report.
Spanish news website Gol Digital claim that the Catalan heavyweights have been keen on the 22-year-old German international but with Spurs also in the hunt, are plotting to avoid offering any competition so that the north London side secure Tah’s signing and let Alderweireld depart.
Tottenham have been reported by the Daily Mirror to have been scouting the three-cap enforcer during his performances in the Bundesliga this season, but that the German side would be looking for a fee of £35million.
It is said that were Tah to arrive in north London, then Alderweireld, who has 17 appearances to his name this season, would be available for a similar fee, with Barca plotting to swoop in over summer.
Football Insider verdict
Spurs have shown that replacing one star player with another can be a mixed bag of results, as was the case with Serge Aurier taking Kyle Walker’s place last summer. Tah is evidently a future talent with bags of potential, but Tottenham already have one young centre back in the shape of Davinson Sanchez, who has performed admirably as a regular in the first team. Alderweireld has established himself as one of the finest defenders in the Premier League, and were it not for his contract situation, there would be no talk of him leaving. Still, Spurs have got to sort out the issue sooner rather than later, and it seems as though they will face one less competitor for Tah should they make a move.
