Liverpool are leading the race to sign FC Porto’s 19-year-old centre-back Diogo Leite and should they succeed in their pursuit, the Reds will loan him out next season, according to a report.
The Guardian claims that the teenager is also wanted by Arsenal who will meet the £13.2million release clause, as well as Manchester City, but the Portuguese giants are keen to keep hold of their talented youngster.
Leite has played at every age at international level apart from the senior side which is the next step for the 6ft 1in enforcer.
The defender is under contract at the Estadio do Dragao until 2021.
Football Insider verdict:
Leite has been a prominent fixture in the Segunda Liga, making 27 appearances so far and with Jurgen Klopp’s increasing reliance on youth team players, it’s likely that this would be a transfer that would suit the youngster. Trent Alexander-Arnold is one who has come through the youth set-up to make a place his own in the Reds starting line-up. It’s certainly a transfer that would match up with the German manager’s footballing philosophy and with Leite having already come through every age level on the international scene with flying colours, there’s no reason why he won’t go on to become a big name in the game. With the likes of Arsenal and Man City sniffing around though, they’d better get their cash-book out quickly but we can’t see the club hanging around when Leite can be captured for £13.2m – a snip in the footballing world these days.
