Report: Tottenham 26-year-old eyed by Liverpool in giants' transfer hunt
Liverpool are joined by Manchester United and Chelsea in eyeing up a transfer swoop for Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claim on their website that the trio of Premier League giants are all keeping an eye on the 26-year-old’s situation at Spurs after he returned from injury, only to find himself used as a fringe player by manager Mauricio Pochettino.
The Kenyan enforcer has made just 13 appearances this season as a result of cartilage damage picked up early in the campaign, with just four of those coming among the starting XI.
Steven Gerrard had said earlier in the week that Liverpool’s ideal signing would be a midfield general like Wanyama.
Football Insider verdict
While the Kenyan international may well be on the fringes of the Tottenham first team right now, there is no doubt he is still an important player for the club, and an exit seems highly unlikely. It just so happens that Mousa Dembele and Eric Dier are in fine form, but if either of the duo drop off, pick up an injury or get suspended, then it will be the 26-year-old who is almost certainly first in line to take their place. Liverpool could really do with a character of Wanyama’s ilk, with his no nonsense, tough tackling performances, but prising him from Spurs’ grasp will be a tough task. As for the player himself, he will just want to be playing football after his knee injury, and the longer the club stay in the FA Cup and the Champions League, the better his chances.
