Jose Mourinho is used to getting his own way in the transfer market, but it looks like he will have to admit defeat in his pursuit of Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic, according to a report.
The Sun have reported that the club has issued another hands off to Man United and are set to offer Perisic a new deal.
The 28-year-old is under contract until 2020 but Inter’s Sporting Director Piero Ausilio has now rubbished claims that Perisic could leave for the Premier League in the summer, and said they are currently in talks over a contract extension.
“I don’t understand where some of these stories come from,” said Piero Ausilio.
“The same goes for Perisic [no intention of selling him]. He is an important player and we are currently discussing a new contract with him.”
The Sun claim that Mourinho has been trying to thrash out a £45m deal for Perisic, but with the Premier League opening games just a week away, this could sound the death knell over the deal.
Perisic enjoyed a fine season in Serie A with Inter, scoring 11 goals and adding 11 assists in 36 games.
Mourinho was hoping to add Perisic to his other incomings this summer, with Romelu Lukaku (£72million), Nemanja Matic (£38million) and Victor Lindelof (£30million) already arriving at Old Trafford.
Football Insider verdict:
Manchester United have done some smart business this summer – especially the signing of Lukaku from under the nose of rivals Chelsea – but this would have been the cherry on top. Perisic would have made the United attack, so often lacking last year, that much more potent, but it does look like Mourinho will now have to look elsewhere if he wants more reinforcements.
In other Man United news, rivals Liverpool made an audacious bid for this United player over the summer.
