Manchester United are eyeing up a summer transfer swoop for Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama as they believe he is ready to exit the club, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claim on their website that the Red Devils are looking to bolster their options in the middle of the park come the end of the current campaign, with Michael Carrick set to retire and Marouane Fellaini looking destined to leave Old Trafford.
Jose Mourinho is said to be looking for a player who can work in a similar role to Nemanja Matic, and among the six names revealed by the report, which include Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos, is Spurs’ Wanyama, who has had a £40million valuation slapped on his head.
The Kenyan international has struggled for game time this season after his long term knee injury, managing to make just 15 appearances, of which only six have come in the starting XI, and United are said to believe that he would be open to leaving after being stuck on the fringes of the first team.
Football Insider verdict
The situation with Wanyama could well be decided between now and the end of the season, with it all depending on how much game time he is handed by Mauricio Pochettino. With Mousa Dembele and Eric Dier the regulars in the centre of the park, the Kenyan has struggled, although the English enforcer’s move into the centre of defence did see Wanyama line up alongside the Belgian against Crystal Palace. These next few matches are his time to shine and prove to Pochettino that he should be a first team mainstay rather than another option off the bench. If he fails to do so, and Manchester United are willing to splash the cash, then an exit in summer looks more than likely.
