Report: Midfielder poised to join Midlands club after Aston Villa exit

By Danny Wright

Henry Cowans has been without a club since exiting Aston Villa at the end of last season but is now poised to sign for non-league side Telford, according to a report.

The Birmingham Mail claims that Cowans, 20, is ready to agree terms with the Midlands club after he was released from the Villains academy earlier in the summer.

Cowans is the son of Aston Villa hero Gordon, but it seems his career path has taken quite a different route to his father with him now ready to sign up for the Shropshire-based National League North side.

The central midfielder failed to earn a single senior appearance while at Villa Park but had a semi-successful loan stint with Stevenage in League Two last term as he made 22 appearances across all competitions, supplying three assists in the process.

He played a prominent role for the Villa Under-23 side in Premier League 2 the season before that where his versatility showed as he featured on both flanks as well as in the centre of the park.

Football Insider Verdict

Cowans showed with Stevenage last season that he is certainly going to be a great signing for Telford, who are playing two levels lower than what the midfielder was last term. That was the youngsters first taste of senior football away from the Bodymoor Heath academy and it was perhaps unfair for the Villa hierarchy to completely judge his capabilities on that alone. Telford haven’t had the best of starts to their season but they will no doubt hope that a player like Cowans could potentially spark a promotion push. There are some tough teams in their division like Tamworth and Kidderminster but one good season for the Bucks could mean that Cowan will be finding his way back into league football soon.
