Report: Newcastle handed triple transfer boost after crucial Ashley decision
Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has been given the go-ahead to secure three new signings in January after owner Mike Ashley decided to back the Spaniard, according to a report.
The Press Association are quoted by the Chronicle’s live blog on their website (16/01, 13:29) as stating that the Sports Direct supremo has been convinced by Benitez that additional reinforcements are needed in order to help secure the club’s top flight status, as he looks to protect his investment ahead of a potential sale.
In what will be a major boost to the club, it is said that Benitez and managing director Lee Charnley will now look to work with a limited budget in trying to tie down the necessary arrivals to St James’ Park, with just over two weeks left to go in the January transfer window.
The report states that the manager will be able to receive increased funds if he is able to offload out-of-favour players such as Jack Colback and Henri Saivet from the playing squad, but that first team regulars are not for sale this month.
Ashley is reportedly still in negotiations with Amanda Staveley over a potential takeover deal but that talks are progressing slowly, and as a result he has been forced to make the crucial decision of backing Benitez this month to avoid the risk of relegation and the club losing its value.
In other Newcastle United transfer news, the club must look to break their rivals’ hearts and swoop in for an attacking swap deal.
