Newcastle are remaining hopeful that they can secure Andros Townsend with the move resting on whether Crystal Palace can sign a replacement, according to a report.
The Guardian reported on their transfer blog on Wednesday (12.21) that the Toon were still holding hopes of re-signing the 25-year-old wide player.
Sports site HITC claimed that the England international is Rafa Benitez’ number one target and Palace would prefer to let him leave on a permanent basis this window rather than a loan.
But, the Guardian has stated that there is still one obstacle with the deal is currently resting on whether Sam Allardyce can secure replacements before next Wednesday’s window closure.
The south east London club have agreed a fee of an initial £9m for Norwich’s Robbie Brady, while they are also interested in Patrick van Aanholt from Sunderland.
Both players are natural on the left, while Townsend has covered both sides of the pitch at various stages for Palace this season.
The 13-time capped international has played in 24 fixtures for Palace in all competitions, bringing a return of one goal and three assists.
He is still contracted to the club until 2021, but it is looking as though he could be making the move back to the north east in a second consecutive January window.
Football Insider verdict
It would seem that this ongoing transfer saga will not be concluded until the clock strikes midnight on Wednesday. There has been constant updates on whether the deal is going ahead or not with both clubs unwilling to negotiate from their initial stance. However, Townsend would be well worth it for Newcastle if they are able to sign him and the move would also be beneficial to him. The winger was unwilling to drop down to the Championship in the summer, but given Newcastle’s current position in the English second tier it is looking increasingly likely that he will only have to spend a few months at most in the division. Fans and the coaching staff will know what they’re getting with Townsend and the club must now make sure they get the deal done.
