Newcastle United have entered the race to sign Everton midfielder Ross Barkley this summer, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claims that the Tyneside club have shown an interest in the 23-year-old ahead of their return to top flight action next season
The newspaper claims that Newcastle will face some stiff competition as fellow Premier League sides Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham are also keen on the midfielder alongside Italian giants AC Milan.
The report claims that the Magpies are currently facing a disadvantage in their pursuit of Barkley as they would fall significantly short of the financial package required at this moment in time.
This follows up from the story in the Sun which reported that Everton are looking to receive around £35million for the Englishman after he reportedly rejected a new contract at Goodison Park worth £100,000-a-week.
Barkley enjoyed a fine campaign on Merseyside last season, contributing six goals and nine assists in all competitions.
The youngster’s contract at Goodison Park runs out at the end of next season.
Football Insider verdict
With top sides in the hunt to sign Barkley this summer, it is highly unlikely that Newcastle are going to be able to convince the midfielder to move to St James’ Park. It is doubtful that Barkley would sacrifice the chance of playing in Europe next season to join a team who has just clinched promotion back to the Premier League. However, moving to Tyneside wouldn’t be such a step-back in his career as the midfielder would certainly be guaranteed first-team football where he would have the chance to shine as the team’s star player. Barkley is unlikely to be a starter with Chelsea, Arsenal or Tottenham so if the Magpies are serious about their pursuit for the Liverpudlian, they need to persuade him that he will be able to develop his footballing career at the club for many years to come.
