Report: Newcastle jet out on transfer mission for midfield goal machine

Newcastle United are interested in Holstein Kiel’s Dominick Drexler who has scored eight goals in 16 appearances in Bundesliga 2 this season, according to a report.

Kicker reports that the Magpies have scouted the midfielder several times but face competition from Aston Villa and Cardiff City for the player’s services.

The report claims the two Championship clubs have already reached out to the player but no offers have been made yet.

Drexler has scored eight goals this season, and added six assists in the league.

The midfielder has been played mostly as an attacking midfielder and centre midfielder this season, but in the past has featured as a left-winger and a centre-forward for his previous clubs.

Drexler is under contracted until 2020, having only been with his current club since 2016.

Football Insider Verdict

The Magpies’ lack of goals this season, has seen them slip down the table and start to look over the shoulder. If Rafa Benitez was able to sign a goalscoring midfielder such as Drexler in January, it could help secure their Premier League status. He might be untested at this level but with stats like this he has to be worth a punt. Newcastle have scouted him several times now and should have the measure of the man they are interested in. They should act fast as well with Championship clubs Aston Villa and Cardiff also interested.
