Report: Newcastle pursuit of Premier League attacking duo takes another twist
By Amir Mir
Newcastle have not given up hope of signing Premier League attacking duo Andros Townsend and Modou Barrow, according to a report.
The Chronicle claim that the Magpies are still talking to Crystal Palace and Swansea as they look for a breakthrough in their respective deals.
It is said despite complications in the negotiations for the wingers, a possible deal for the duo is not dead yet.
This will see the pursuit for Barrow take another twist after north east publication the Shields Gazette previously claimed that a move for the Swansea man is looking unlikely.
For Townsend, it is reported by the Chronicle that his current club wants insurances that they can bring in cover as Rafa Benitez’ side want him on loan first before setting up a cash deal in the summer.

Both Barrow and Townsend have been on the fringes of the first team in recent weeks as they could make a drop down to the Championship and help Benitez’ side secure promotion.
It is claimed Benitez wants two more players during this window and he’s already missed out on deals for the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Tom Cleverley and James McCarthy.
Football Insider verdict:
If Newcastle can sign up the duo during the January transfer window then both wingers will cause absolute havoc in the Championship. Their pace, trickery and directness, would be too much for the lesser teams in the second tier as it will also give Benitez’ side a further edge on the top six chasers. The Magpies are currently battling with leaders Brighton for top spot and adding the Premier League duo will provide them with that much-needed boost. Newcastle are already a potent attacking threat in the second tier and they would become even more lethal with these two new players. In regards to Townsend, the promotion chasers should bite the bullet and pay the fee required for their former player. As the season progresses, the more likely it is looking that Benitez will guide them to the Premier League, so it would be beneficial if he has a squad ready to challenge in the top tier when the summer arrives.
In other Newcastle transfer news, the club has reportedly lined up this 22-year-old attacker.
