Ciaran Clark is set to miss Newcastle’s clash against Wigan on Saturday but three senior players should return from injury in time, according to a report.
Clark, 27, is suffering from a knee injury and the former Aston Villa defender is set to miss the clash against relegation-threatened Wigan, but is believed to be recovering well.
The Evening Chronicle did report that trio Daryl Murphy, Paul Dummett and Grant Hanley are set to return ahead of Saturday’s encounter at St. James’ Park.
Veteran striker Murphy pulled out of Martin O’Neill’s Ireland squad prior to their matches against Wales and Iceland during the international break with a calf problem.
However, the former Ipswich ace is likely to return, while defenders Paul Dummett and Grant Hanley should be fit as Newcastle look to maintain their grip on the Championship table.
Currently clear by just one point ahead of Chris Hughton’s Brighton, the Toon sit seven points clear of the play-offs with just eight league games remaining.
Three points against Wigan, who remain in the bottom three, will see Newcastle move to within touching distance of an instant return to the Premier League following last season’s relegation.
Fans will be hoping for a repeat of the reverse fixture, that saw Rafa Benitez’s side stroll to a comfortable 2-0 win at the DW Stadium thanks to goals from Mo Diame and Christian Atsu.
In other Newcastle news, this 22-year-old could return to face the Latics.
