Report: Tottenham eye La Liga pass master after summer bid confirmed
Tottenham are believed to be interested in signing Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic after the player has failed to hold down a place in the first-team set up at the Bernabeu, according to a report.
Spanish media outlet, AS, made the claim but stated that Spurs would face stiff competition for the player’s signature from Manchester United, Juventus and his former club Inter Milan all waiting in the wings.
It was reported that the Lillywhites made a bid for the player only last summer – news which was confirmed by Madrid’s general director Jose Angel Sanchez.
The 23-year-old Croatian international is now into his third season in La Liga after signing a six-year contract with Los Blancos back in 2015 but has been limited to only a handful of appearances this season.
Zinedine Zidane is believed to want the midfielder to remain in the Spanish capital and has handed him starts against Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
Football Insider verdict:
Tottenham are in need of replacements in the central midfield zone. With Mousa Dembele looking as though he is near to the end of his career and struggling with injuries, the Eric Dier/Christian Eriksen partnership, at times looks bereft of ideas and could do with a fresh face to give a boost to the position. Pochettino has been an admirer of the Croat for some time and he would definitely fit the Argentinian’s total football philosophy but with competition from further afield, Kovacic might be tempted elsewhere after making just seven appearances this season.
