Tottenham are leading the charge to secure the signing of Toulouse defender and club captain Issa Diop in the summer, according to a report.
Radio station talkSPORT claim on their website that Spurs are the front-runners for the 21-year-old’s capture, who has been something of a defensive revelation at the top flight French side since breaking into the first team, having made 82 appearances during his fledgling career.
Said to be rated at £30million, the report states that Tottenham have been long-term admirers of Diop, having watched his development over the past year, and could move to bring the young enforcer, who has five under-21 caps for France, to north London as a potential replacement for Toby Alderweireld.
Diop has turned out 28 times across all competitions this season, netting twice, although his club are fighting relegation at the bottom of Ligue 1, sitting outside the relegation zone on goal difference alone.
Football Insider verdict
The transfer team at Tottenham will be keeping a close eye on Toulouse’s fortunes this season, knowing that the French club’s relegation this season could well leave them open to snapping up Diop on a bargain deal. The £30million valuation seems rather high for a player at the bottom end of a less-competitive European league, but his potential seems to have raised his price tag. Spurs took a big money risk on Davinson Sanchez last summer and that worked out a treat, so there will no doubt be hopes that they can secure another young starlet destined for stardom at the beginning of his career.
