Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez has turned down the chance to join Tottenham this summer, according to a report.
Spanish outlet Don Balon claims that the North London club presented the 23-year-old with an offer to become a regular starter this season but the player rejected the move as Spurs failed to match his current salary with Barcelona.
The report claims that Italian outfit Napoli also made a move for the midfielder but Suarez rebuffed the offer and he looks set to remain at the Camp Nou.
New Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde has only used the Spaniard as a late substitute in their opening two league matches this season.
The youngster re-signed for the La Liga giants last summer from Villarreal but he failed to make the desired impact with the first-team, producing three goals and five assists in all competitions last season.
The midfielder currently has three years remaining on his contract at the Camp Nou.
Football Insider verdict
Spurs supporters should not consider this to be a massive disappointment in the transfer market this summer. Suarez failed to impress last season at Barcelona and at this current moment in time, he would not be an improvement on the current crop of midfielders at Tottenham. Although Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has a fine record of getting the best out of young talent, it would be a big gamble to splash the cash on an unproven player who has failed to impress during his time with the Catalan club. If Tottenham want to bring in some new faces before the window shuts, they should be looking at experienced players who can take them to the next level both domestically and in the Champions League.
