Arsene Wenger has resigned himself to the fact that Alexis Sanchez’ future is not at the Emirates, and is instead prioritising contract talks with Mesut Ozil and Jack Wilshere, according to a report.
The Evening Standard reports that both Ozil and Wilshere are in the final year of their respective contracts, so are free to talk to other clubs, but Wenger does not want to rebuild his midfield entirely.
Speaking to the Standard, Wenger revealled that this transfer window is crucial to the reconstruction of Arsenal’s team.
“It looks like Sanchez will not extend his contract.
“But we want to keep Jack and if we have an opportunity maybe to keep Ozil, the rebuild will be less deep than if all the three left.”
Both Wilshere and Ozil have won major honours at Arsenal, yet Wenger states that the need to earn more money and win more trophies is whats tempting his players away.
“It’s [about] both [money and trophies], always. These guys want to win, and they want to make money as well. So, they want a combination of the two, that big clubs can give them.”
Football Insider verdict:
The Sanchez era is over – so wenger is doing the correct thing in trying to hold onto his next best players. Losing all three in one season to free transfers would represent a monumental failure from Wenger. Jack Wilshere has been associated with Arsenal since 2001, so it is unlikely that he will want to leave, whereas Ozil may have his sights set on another challenge – re-signing the pair on new deals could be the best piece of business Wenger has done in a long while.
