Rodgers will be making a mistake bringing former Celtic mainstay back v Zenit
One interesting aspect of Celtic’s 3-2 win over Partick Thistle was the unexpected return to the starting line-up for Mikael Lustig.
The Swedish international right-back’s last appearance came in the 2-1 league victory over Partick in January, where due to a combination of injury and poor play he was taken off at half-time.
The 31-year-old is now back in action, and presumably will play against Zenit in the upcoming Europa League tie, looking to add to his 37 appearances across all competitions this season as a mainstay in the Hoops side.
That would turn out to be a mistake though, as Lustig isn’t playing well at the moment and could well be carrying an injury.
He was in a dreadful run of form prior to his injury, and didn’t exactly have the greatest game against Partick.
There was also a moment where he seemed to suffer an injury in a challenge with Thistle’s Callum Booth, but he managed to shrug this off and finish the game.
As Lustig is just returning from a injury he may well be targeted as a weak link by the Russian side, which is why he shouldn’t be risked against them.
A player like fellow right-back Cristian Gamboa, who hasn’t played that often but has the advantage of being fully fit, would be preferable for the match.
Perhaps Lustig can, if he has proved his fitness enough by then, start the second leg of the tie. If not though, Gamboa is the man for the job.
