The door will open for Everton to sign January target Joe Worrall this summer if Nottingham Forest don’t get promoted, Football Insider can reveal.
This site revealed yesterday that Forest may be forced to let star duo Worrall and Matty Cash go in the upcoming window if they lose out in the promotion race.
Everton set their sights on Worrall in January but he opted to pen a new four-year deal with the Championship big guns the following month.
Recruitment chief Marcel Brands had been keen on a permanent deal for the centre-back, who is rated at more than £10million by Forest.
Everton are in the market for at least one central defender this summer and are closing in on the capture of Lille defender Gabriel Magalhaes in a £30m deal.
It remains to be seen if new manager Carlo Ancelotti will want two players in that position, although much will depend upon the future of Michael Keane.
Mason Holgate, who signed a new contract last month, and Yerry Mina were the first choice partnership at the back before the season ended last month.
Worrall is playing the best football of his career after slipping down the pecking order under former Forest managers Aitor Karanka and Mark Warburton.
Remarkably, the centre-back has been trusted by Sabri Lamouchi to play the full 90 minutes in all 37 of their Championship games in this campaign.
This comes after he spent last season on loan at Glasgow Rangers, where he had a mixed season and was in and out of the starting XI.
Forest are fifth in the Championship and 10 points adrift of top-two Leeds United and West Brom with nine matches of the campaign remaining.
