Revealed: Major Henderson update ahead of Liverpool second leg v Atletico
Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson is targeting a return to the Liverpool team for next Wednesday’s Champions League showdown against Atletico Madrid, Football Insider understands.
The midfielder has been sorely missed by the runaway Premier League leaders since breaking down in the first leg away defeat to the Spanish club 16 days ago.
A Liverpool source has told Football Insider that Henderson is privately hopeful of shaking off his hamstring injury to return for next Wednesday’s mouthwatering second leg at Anfield.
The England international is working on his recovery at the club’s Melwood training headquarters and is pushing himself to make the starting XI.
Jurgen Klopp initially estimated that the hamstring strain suffered by Henderson in Spain would sideline him for three works.
Saturday’s lunchtime Premier League clash against Bournemouth would appear to come too soon for the 29-year-old, who was playing the best football of his career before the injury.

His desire to make it back for the Champions League decider on what promises to be a memorable Anfield European night is also matched by that of supporters and, no doubt, the entire team and coaching staff.
Henderson’s leadership, commitment and midfield thrust has been badly missed during the team’s worst run of the season.
Liverpool have followed their defeat against Atletico with an unconvincing 3-2 league win over West Ham, a 3-0 league defeat to Watford and a 2-0 FA Cup exit at Chelsea with a weakened side.
Henderson is one of the favourites for the Premier League player of the year award along with teammates Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk as well as Man City’s Kevin de Bruyne.
In other Liverpool news, it can be REVEALED that the club are opening talks on a £50million deal including bonuses for defender.
