David Nugent is on the verge of rejoining old club Preston North End after undergoing a medical at the club today, Football Insider can reveal.
Nugent is a free agent after leaving Derby last month after his contract at the club had expired.
A Preston source has told Football Insider he has agreed the terms of a move to the Championship outfit and will sign a contract if he passes the medical.
A number of clubs have shown an interest in Nugent, but Preston are now set to win the race for a striker with an excellent track record in the English second tier.
Nugent made his named at Preston and broke into the England side during his time at the club.
He scored 37 goals in 105 appearances for North End having signed from Bury in January 2005 before joining Portsmouth in a £6million deal in 2007 and subsequently played for Burnley, Leicester and Middlesbrough before joining the Rams in January 2017.
Nugent, who has scored 120 times in the Championship, will help fill the void by Callum Robinson’s departure to Premier League new boys Sheffield United.
Preston boss Alex Neil currently has Jayden Stockley, Sean Maguire and Louis Moult as central striking options.
