Richard Hughes arrival date at Liverpool revealed after breakthrough in talks – sources

Liverpool have agreed terms with Richard Hughes after a breakthrough in talks and he will join at the start of the summer, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed that the Bournemouth recruitment chief has agreed to join the Anfield giants as their new sporting director.

Well-placed sources have told Football Insider that Liverpool are set to announce Hughes’ arrival soon.

It coincides with the just-announced return of Michael Edwards as their new chief executive of football, with Hughes is set to follow as one of many backroom changes at the club.

It is believed that the 44-year-old’s arrival at the end of the season was insisted upon by Edwards as key to his own return.

Liverpool to announce Richard Hughes appointment soon

Bournemouth announced earlier this month that Hughes, 44, will leave his post at the end of the season after a successful spell as their technical director.

He is highly regarded in recruitment circles following his spell with the Cherries, where he signed the likes of Dominic Solanke, Aaron Ramsdale and Callum Wilson.

The Reds have sought a new recruitment chief following Jorg Schmadtke’s departure at the end of the January transfer window, but now they look to have their replacement.

They remain in the works to recruit a new head coach to succeed Jurgen Klopp when he departs at the end of the season after nine years.

Sources have told Football Insider (10 March) that they have shortlisted Roberto De Zerbi, Julian Nagelsmann and Ruben Amorim as candidates.

It is believed that Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso is still their top choice, but sources have told Football Insider (5 March) that he currently prefers a move to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.
