Hateley delivers verdict on Rangers manager Murty, compares to Ibrox legend

Rangers legend Mark Hateley believes Graeme Murty’s appointment as Gers boss is similar to Walter Smith’s start as manager of the Ibrox giants.
Murty, like Smith, was a rookie manager when he took the reins at Ibrox and both have enjoyed similar starts results-wise as Gers boss.
Smith went on to become one of the most successful managers in British football history and led the Ibrox giants to nine-in-a-row during the 1990s.
Hately thinks that although Murty’s reputation as a manager is virtually non-existent as yet, it doesn’t preclude him from being a success in the hotseat.
“I like what Graeme’s doing,” Hateley said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.
“It’s a bit like Walter – the answer is under your nose sometimes. Sometimes you just don’t see it. When Walter came in, everybody went, ‘Walter?’ He was an assistant at Dundee United, assistant to Graeme and the rest is history.
“David Murray came and asked some of the senior pros – including myself – who we would fancy as our next manager.
“My answer was, ‘It’s right here, under your nose right now’.
“Just because he’s not a name, doesn’t mean he’s not going to be a success.”
Murty is in his second stint as manager at Ibrox after a brief spell following Mark Warburton’s resignation last year and again after Pedro Caixinha was sacked in October.
The 43-year-old has led the Gers to five win on the spin for the first time in several years as his side have closed the gap to Scottish Premiership leaders to six points.
Despite his inexperience Murty is still undefeated against Celtic as Gers manager with two creditable draws at Celtic Park to his name.
The Gers boss will experience his first Old Firm at Ibrox next month as the Gers have the chance to cut Celtic’s lead to three points and really put pressure on Brendan Rodgers’ side in the race for the title.
