Report: Manchester United eye swoop for Tottenham talisman, ready to spend £80m

By Emma Sanders

Manchester United are prepared to spend a huge sum of money to bring Harry Kane to Old Trafford, according to a report.

Calcio Mercato claim Manchester United are prepared to splash £80million on the Tottenham talisman and see him as the long-term replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Kane recently signed a new contract with Tottenham which will keep him at the club until 2022 but Manchester United hope to tempt him away from their Premier League rivals.

The Italian report goes on to suggest Kane may opt to leave White Hart Lane in the summer if Tottenham fall short of a place in the Champions League.

Spurs currently sit in fourth place in the Premier League table and look like a strong bet to qualify for the Champions League for the second year running.

However, United are breathing down their necks and they face tough competition from City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea to remain in the top four.

Kane is considered one of the best strikers in the Premier league. He won the Golden Boot last season, and he has already scored 10 goals in 14 Premier League appearances this campaign, plus two more in the Champions League.

Football Insider verdict:

Kane has recently committed his long-term future to Tottenham knowing there was a chance they might miss out on Champions League football next season. He clearly sees his future with Mauricio Pochettino and it’s unlikely he would opt to leave London, despite the lure of a huge club like Manchester United. Pochettino has signed a number of key players to long-term contracts at Spurs and is building the nucleus of a team that’s going to become serious contenders in the Premier League and possibly the Champions League in the next decade. United need to concentrate on getting back into the Champions League themselves before they can think about tempting top-rate strikers to the club, let alone a rising star like Kane.
