Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot has heaped huge praise on fellow teammate Dwight Gayle for his performance against Manchester United on the weekend.
The 27-year-old made his first Premier League start since September at Old Trafford and he managed to notch up his first goal of the campaign to put the visitors in the lead.
However, Jose Mourinho’s side responded with four goals through Anthony Martial, Chris Smalling, Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku to leave the Magpies empty handed.
The Tyneside club have not managed to pick up a victory at Old Trafford since the 2013-14 season where Yohan Cabaye scored the only goal of the game.
Speaking to the Chronicle, Newcastle’s number one Elliot revealed that he was pleased with Gayle’s display as he looked to the positives despite the defeat.
“He hasn’t had a lot of opportunities this season, but we know what a great striker and finisher he is,” he said
“It was a great finish and to see him and Joselu working well together is great for the team and gave us a few options out on the pitch.”
Despite being the club’s top goalscorer during the previous campaign, Gayle has only managed to complete 90 minutes on one occasion in the Premier League this season.
On the other hand, Elliot has featured in every single minute in the league for the Magpies this season, keeping a total of three clean sheets in the process.
Both players will be hopeful that the team can bounce back when they host Watford next weekend.
