Paul Robinson has called for Jose Mourinho to drop Eric Dier or Davinson Sanchez tonight to make room in the Tottenham side for Toby Alderweireld.
The former England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed Dier, 26, and Sanchez, 24, were “poor” in the loss to Sheffield United on Thursday night.
Goals from Sander Berge, Lys Mousset and Oli McBurnie were enough for Chris Wilder’s side to take all three points.
Eyebrows were raised at the ease in which the Blades scored their second goal as Dier and Ben Davies both failed to pick up Mousset.
Robinson was unimpressed by the defending and suggested that Toby Alderweireld should be reinstated for tonight’s game against Everton.
“Jose has had a fully fit squad to choose from since the restart so I am unsure whether he will make changes tonight,” he told Football Insider.
“But defensively they were poor against Sheffield United.
“Mourinho has stuck with Dier and Sanchez and he is clearly working on that partnership for next season.
“But those two conceded far too many chances the other night. They were poor.
“The best defender at the club is Alderweireld and he was on the bench again.”
Spurs have named an unchanged back four for the first three games of the Premier League restart with Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen forced to watch on from the bench.
Mourinho’s side take on Everton tonight and a victory for the Toffees would see them leapfrog their opponents in the table.
In other Tottenham news, Darren Bent has told Football Insider Jose Mourinho has been “harsh” with attacker.
