Robinson expects Defoe to sign new Rangers deal after key development
Paul Robinson expects Jermain Defoe to sign a new Rangers deal and claims he is fit enough to play for years.
Defoe’s former Tottenham teammate, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims the forward is one of the fittest players he’s ever played with.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Steven Gerrard recently confirmed Defoe, 38, is ‘in talks’ over a new Ibrox deal with his contract set to expire this summer.
However, as revealed by Football Insider, Defoe would have to take a major pay cut to reflect his new role at Rangers.
It has been suggested that Defoe could be kept on as a coach if Gerrard feels his playing days are over.
Robinson admits he never thought Defoe would go into coaching when they were teammates at Tottenham.

“If he wants to stay there, he’s obviously not going to play forever,” Robinson told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.
“He’s certainly fit enough to play another season. I expect him to stay and extend his contract by another year.
“There will be a conversation towards the end of next year about what happens next. He’s one of the fittest players I’ve ever played with.
“He can certainly play for a few more years. It’s whether Steven wants to move him onto the coaching staff. Obviously the relationship between them is good.
“When you play with people you can pick out the players who will be coaches and managers. He’s not one I thought would be.
“Maybe he suits a role as a striking coach. He’s taken far too much from the game to not put something back in.”
Defoe won the first league title of his career with Rangers this season and lifted the trophy at the weekend.
He chipped in with six league goals during the club’s unbeaten league campaign.
