Robinson: Newcastle closing in on 'great bit of business' after Murphy update
Paul Robinson has claimed “it would be a great bit of business” if Newcastle United can secure Jacob Murphy on a new long-term contract.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and England goalkeeper stressed the importance of keeping the 26-year-old if the Magpies don’t have money to spend this summer.
Murphy has just 12 months left on his contract at St. James’ Park.
His contract situation has alerted clubs from across Europe.
Bayer Leverkusen, Galatasaray, FC Porto, Leeds, Burnley, Southampton, Watford and Rangers are all interested in the wide man.
However, as revealed by Football Insider (30th June), Murphy is close to agreeing a new long-term contract with Newcastle after a breakthrough in talks, with all parties now expecting a deal to be concluded.

When asked if the English winger was deserving of a new contract, Robinson told Football Insider:
“That would be a great bit of business if they can get him tied down to a new deal. He did well last season when he came into the side.
“It doesn’t sound like Newcastle have much money to spend this summer so players like that you need to keep.
“He is a proven Premier League player and he’s versatile, which is always a plus.”
Football Insider revealed on 25th May that Steve Bruce has a meagre transfer budget of just £8-10million to work with this summer.
Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is refusing to spend big amid hope that the Premier League will ratify his sale of the club.
