Robinson: This is why Tottenham fans would be ‘happy’ for Aurier to join Arsenal

Tottenham fans “would be happy” for Serge Aurier to join Arsenal in spite of the club’s rivalry, according to Paul Robinson.

The former White Hart Lane number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said the 28-year-old’s defending left a lot to be desired at Spurs.

Aurier mutually agreed to terminate his contract with Tottenham on deadline day after the club failed to find a buyer.

According to Sky Sports (September 2nd), the right-back is open to a move to Tottenham’s north London rivals Arsenal.

The Gunners have already bolstered their options at right-back this year with the signing of Japan international Takehiro Tomiyasu.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on the potential move, Robinson said:

“I don’t think Serge Aurier spent long enough or did well enough at Spurs to build up a rapport with the fans. If I’m honest, I don’t think they would not be too worried about him moving across north London.

“His defending is questionable at times and we saw that too often at Spurs. And for that reason a lot of fans would probably send him over there with their best wishes. Some would probably even be happy if he went there.

“I cannot see him being a player who comes back and haunts Spurs in the future.”

Aurier joined Spurs from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2017.

He made 110 appearances across all competitions for the Lilywhites.
