Paul Robinson has claimed Eric Dier could be replaced at Tottenham this summer if he cannot “rediscover” his old form.
The former Spurs goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, tipped Spurs to sign at least two new centre-backs ahead of the new season.
Tottenham currently have Dier, Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez and Joe Rodon as their senior centre-half options.
As revealed by Football Insider, Spurs are planning to sell Sanchez this summer regardless of who takes over as manager.
However, Robinson insisted Dier’s future at Tottenham is by no means certain.
He suggested there would be at least two new arrivals who could take his place.
“I think he only played this season because he was the best of a bad bunch at centre-half,” Robinson told Football Insider’s Dylan Childs.
“They’ve struggled with centre-halves this season. They need two new centre-halves if they’re going to compete and I expect them to get two.
“I think before Eric struggled with midfield and centre-half, playing those two positions. He seems to have settled in at centre-half last year.
“I don’t think it helped him not having a constant, steady partner. It was always Sanchez, Dier, Alderweireld. The amount of goals they let in last year, there was a problem.
“His form’s cost him place in the England side. It’s something he needs to rediscover. He needs to get his old form back, playing regularly in the Tottenham team before he can even think about an international call-up.”
Dier played 39 times across all competitions for Spurs during the recently-concluded campaign.
He fell out of favour under Jose Mourinho and played in just two of the Portuguese manager’s final eight league games in charge.
