Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Emilio Izaguirre could be ending his seven-year spell with Celtic this summer.
The 31-year-old senior player found first-team opportunities few and far between last season as Kieran Tierney continued to strengthen his grasp on the left-back slot.
Izaguirre’s only lengthy run in Rodgers’ plans came in the winter as he deputised for an injured Tierney, but in total he only made 18 appearances across all competitions, with 12 of them being starts.
Rodgers now admits that the 93-times Honduras international could potentially leave Parkhead this summer with a move outside of Europe on the cards.
“Nothing to report on but there is maybe an opportunity for him to go elsewhere outside of Europe,” said the Hoops boss, as quoted by Sky Sports.
“He’s come back in and been training. It is something we will speak about to him and his agent and take it from there.”
Izaguirre has been a vital part of the Celtic squad ever since he signed from Motaguo in 2010.
He has since won six Scottish Premiership titles as well as two League Cups and two Scottish Cups.
The Honduran has made 252 appearances for the Bhoys across all competitions in the last seven years, scoring five goals and supplying an impressive 47 assists from the full-back position.
Football Insider Verdict
It would no doubt be gutting for Celtic fans to see Izaguirre leave this summer after spending so long being a vital part of the squad. However the ex-Motogua ace is clearly suffering as a result of Tierney’s breakthrough into the first-team. The Scot is without doubt one of the best full-backs that his country has produced in a very long time and could take Celtic to ten league titles in a row with ease. Izaguirre is past his prime and a move away would be a good idea for him to start winding down his career. He is definitely good enough to play in the USA or Mexico top-flights. That would give him the chance to play closer to his home nation and play in a respectable league.
In other Celtic news, this defender is expected to sign for the Bhoys after holding talks with Rodgers.
