Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers believes Lee Congerton can have a massive impact for the club in their pursuit of transfer targets and has backed him to find the next Philippe Coutinho.

Congerton was appointed as Celtic’s new head of recruitment last month, having worked alongside Rodgers when he was a coach at Chelsea.

But Rodgers believes Congerton is one of the best in the business when it comes to unearthing hidden gems, and he hopes he can continue his fine work at Celtic, and possibly hand them a crucial advantage over their rivals.

Congerton was credited with spotting Brazilian talents such as Philippe Coutinho and Neymar as schoolkids whilst working at Chelsea, and Rodgers revealed he used that information to land Coutinho for Liverpool in 2013.

Alexandre Pato was another name plucked out of relative obscurity, a player that has since played for a number of Europe’s top clubs, including Chelsea and AC Milan.

Rodgers told the Daily Record: “The reason I brought Lee in was because he’s one of the best at it. This is the guy who found me Coutinho. No-one would have heard of Coutinho otherwise.

“There is talent out there and we will always look to get it. The reason I’ve brought Lee in is because of that. So I’e brought in one of the best in his field. Someone who has a worldwide network.

“He can really help us in a lot of markets, to get the best possible players we can. But the profile and everything has to be right to fit in with the club.”

Since moving to Liverpool, Coutinho has become one of the most exciting attacking talents in Europe, contributing 30 goals and 30 assists from 132 Premier League appearances.

With a key summer transfer window ahead of Rodgers and Celtic, the 44-year-old is determined to build on the club’s success this season by building a squad capable of challenging in Europe.

He will be looking to add a mixture of youth and experience to his squad, with one eye also on the future, having brought in promising 19-year-old midfielder Kouassi Eboue in January, and Moussa Dembele, 20, in the summer.
