Rodgers snub of Celtic player looks even more bizarre after solid international display
The situation with Celtic right-back Cristian Gamboa is one of the biggest mysteries during Brendan Rodgers’ time as Hoops boss.
After buying the 28-year-old from West Brom in 2016, the Hoops boss seems to have completely lost faith in the Costa Rican international, which is bizarre when you consider that first choice right-back Mikael Lustig has struggled with form at times.
He made only three appearances last season, the last of which was in February against St Johnstone, and been completely snubbed by the manager.
Even more bizarrely, Gamboa has remained a regular at international level, and is off to the World Cup with Costa Rica, and in his more recent performance he turned in a solid display for 72 minutes against England.
The fact that the Hoops have so few players heading to the World Cup and one can’t even get near the first-team is intriguing, as Gamboa might well go on to have a great World Cup, but the chances of him getting into the Hoops side look minimal at best.

Of course, perhaps if the player has a storming World Cup it could make it easier for the Hoops to move him on in the summer, as clubs will no doubt be interesting in signing a player who shone in the biggest tournament in football.
Gamboa’s signing looks to be one of the few errors made by the Hoops boss so far, but fans will forgive Rodgers as he has been so incredibly successful for the Bhoys.
