Noel Whelan has rubbished Barry Ferguson’s claim that Celtic defender Nir Bitton should have been sent off for his foul on Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aberdeen and Leeds United striker insisted that it was a “rash decision” from referee Bobby Madden that “turned the table” at Ibrox.
Bitton was sent off shortly after the hour mark for pulling Morelos down when he was adjudged to have been clean through on goal.
It would prove to be a decisive moment in the match with Steven Gerrard’s side scoring the only goal of the game eight minutes later.
Speaking to the Open Goal podcast yesterday, Rangers legend Barry Ferguson said that the incident was “a clear red card”.
When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on what was a decisive moment in the match, English pundit Whelan said: “That has never been a sending off.
“That is never a sending off. When you look where he is in the field, he is outside the 18-yard box and he has got Ajer coming round. Even if he gets past Bitton he has Ajer meeting him at the 18-yard box.
“It was a rash decision from the referee that really turned the table on the day.
“That is not a clear-cut opportunity in my opinion. Ajer is in shot and he is deeper. How is that a clear-cut opportunity? It is not.”
