Ruben Amorim pulls squad u-turn on Leny Yoro after Man United training discovery

Leny Yoro is in contention to make his Man United debut at Ipswich Town after being pulled from the Under-21s squad at the last minute, the Manchester Evening News has reported.

The centre-back joined the Red Devils in the summer, signing from Lille for £58.8million (The Daily Telegraph), but after breaking his foot in a friendly in the summer, the Frenchman is yet to make his competitive debut for his new club.

Earlier this week though, he was spotted taking part in Ruben Amorim’s first training session as Man United head coach. The teenager looked to be operating on the right of a back three in the session.

It is now thought that the 19-year-old had been told he would be playing for the club’s Under-21s in their National League Cup game with Altrincham on Tuesday night.

However, it is reported that Amorim took the decision to withdraw Yoro from that match after learning something from his appearance in training.

It remains to be whether this is a positive or negative reflection on the centre-back’s performance in training.

Even so, it has been suggested that he could now feature at Portman Road this weekend (24 November), which would indicate that Amorim has been pleased with what he has seen from Yoro so far, if that is the case.

Man United may have to be cautious over Leny Yoro return

Football Insider Opinion

You can certainly understand the temptation there will be at Old Trafford to get the defender playing as soon as possible.

The Red Devils spent a huge amount of money to sign the teenager in the summer, but have yet to get a return on that investment due to his injury.

Getting him involved will start to change that, especially given the immense expectation there is on him.

Man United may also need him to play a part, given Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez could again be absent against the Tractor Boys.

Indeed, centre-back does seem to be a position where the club are looking for some longer-term options.

However, it is a long time since Yoro himself played, and at his age, it may take some time for him to get up to speed with the demands of the Premier League.

As a result, United may have to be careful about how they use the teenager in the first few weeks after his return, since they will not want to risk another spell on the sidelines through injury.
