Ruben Amorim’s next management job is already lined up after Man United sack

Ruben Amorim could be set for a rapid-fire return to management after being sacked by Manchester United.

Amorim’s 14-month spell in charge of Man United has come to an end on Monday, following a 1-1 draw with rivals Leeds United at Elland Road.

His side had won just one of their last five games before his dismissal, but the decision looks to have mainly been taken because of long-term uncertainty around his tactics and disagreements on transfers.

Darren Fletcher will now take charge of United on an interim basis, leaving Amorim to search for the sixth permanent job of his managerial career.

The 40-year-old is bound to be targeted by clubs who prefer to look at his success with Sporting CP, rather than his failure at Old Trafford, and he may well be back in the dugout soon to replace a manager who is under serious pressure as it stands.

Who’s next for Ruben Amorim?

La Liga giants Sevilla have struggled to reach their previous heights in recent seasons, with their last top-half finish coming back in the 2021-22 campaign.

Interim boss Joaquin Caparros helped them avoid relegation by one point in 17th place last season after the sacking of García Pimienta, with former Argentina international Almeyda then hired as his permanent successor in June.

Almeyda led his new side to a relatively strong start to 2025-26, which included a 4-1 win over champions Barcelona in October, but their recent form has left a lot to be desired and could see him sacked soon.

Their 3-0 home defeat to bottom-of-the-table Levante on Sunday represented a third consecutive loss, with just one league win picked up in their last six outings.

Sevilla have now lost 10 of their 18 La Liga games this season to now sit 11th, with just four points between them and Valencia in 18th and a new report from Excelsior stating that Almeyda is in an “extremely delicate position”.

If the 52-year-old is relieved of his duties, then Amorim could emerge as a leading candidate for the vacant role.

Amorim was successful at Braga and Sporting before moving to the Premier League, as he led the latter to two Primeira Liga titles and had a 71 per cent win record at the time of his departure.

He is set to be one of the most sought-after out-of-work managers for clubs outside of England due to his previous record in Portugal, and he may well be back in management with Sevilla very soon if Almeyda is sacked.

Amorim’s Man United contract situation explained

Sevilla may well be interested in appointing Amorim if they find themselves needing a new manager soon, but the terms of his Man United exit mean a deal to hire him is set to be difficult to strike for any club.

Fabrizio Romano has reported, via Instagram, that the ex-Sporting CP boss remains under contract with the Red Devils until June 2027, after he was initially appointed on a two-and-a-half-year deal in November 2024.

The club’s decision to sack him, rather than agree a mutual exit, means Amorim’s contract remains valid for another 18 months, unless a new club wishes to appoint him in the meantime.

This means that, if Sevilla did wish to make him their new boss, they would likely have to buy him out of his United contract, which would come at a real cost.

Amorim could struggle to find a new job due to this, but could waive some of the fees in place if he is desperate to return to management within the next 18 months.
