Russell Martin has surprise new goal threat after Rangers star’s ‘superb’ moment away from Ibrox

Russell Martin has just uncovered a hidden talent from one of his new arrivals as Rangers stars jetted out on international duty.

Nico Raskin scored his first goal for Belgium, but after being dropped by the Gers manager, the 24-year-old clearly has some improvements to make if he is to be reintegrated into the team.

Thelo Aasgaard, Bojan Miovski, and John Souttar were amongst some notable performances away from Ibrox, with Aasgaard scoring four goals against Moldova as a second-half substitute to steal the show.

However, the most impressive performance by a member of Martin’s squad appears to have come from a defender, who has yet to even make his debut for the Light Blues after arriving in the summer window.

Derek Cornelius scores an incredible free-kick vs Wales

Described as a “superb” moment by BBC Sport, Derek Cornelius netted an audacious free-kick against Wales on Tuesday, 9 September, making a difference during Canada’s international friendly.

As well as scoring the match winner, the 27-year-old kept a clean sheet against a bright Wales side, silencing the likes of Harry Wilson, Dan James, and David Brooks.

It was a moment that will be written into Canada’s history books, even if only done in a friendly game, and it will have given Martin plenty to think about back at Ibrox this month.

Could James Tavernier be taken off set-piece duty at Rangers?

James Tavernier won back Rangers fans after scoring an important goal against Motherwell earlier in the season, but given that he is a right-back, the Gers cannot depend on him for goals.

With both Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane sold during the summer transfer window, it remains to be seen where the bulk of the team’s goals are going to come from for the 2024-25 season.

Findlay Curtis, 18, has offered a bright spark in the final third, as has Danilo after scoring against Club Brugge, but none of these players appear to have a season-winning number of goals in them.

While Cornelius has very rarely hit the back of the net over the last couple of seasons, something he has never done for Canada before Tuesday, Martin might be looking to trust him in the final third.
