Russell Martin ‘killed Southampton, to be sacked tonight’ – Fans react to latest

Russell Martin is facing more calls from Southampton fans for his sacking following their clash with Aston Villa at Villa Park.

Following their promotion from the Championship at the end of last season, the Saints have struggled to adapt to life back in the top-flight.

They have not been helped by a string of errors leading to goals, many of which have come as a result of them persisting with Martin’s style of playing out from the back which has infuriated supporters and pundits alike.

That has already put plenty of pressure on the Southampton manager, something that has not changed following events at Villa Park on Saturday (7 December).

Russell Martin sack calls grow after another Southampton defeat

Having taking just one point from four games going into this clash with Aston Villa, the Saints found themselves rooted to the foot of the table.

A positive result was therefore needed to give them some hope of getting out of trouble, but it was not forthcoming.

Southampton found themselves behind with less than 25 minutes on the clock after another error, as Jhon Duran robbed Taylor Harwood-Bellis inside his own half.

The Villa striker then drove into the area before firing past Joe Lumley to put the hosts 1-0 up, and that goal was enough to secure all three points for Unai Emery’s side.

That has left the Saints still bottom of the table with just five points from 15 league games this season, and they are now eight points from safety, having played a game more than the three sides above them.

After another lacklustre performance, many Southampton fans were left calling for Martin’s departure on social media, demanding it happens before the end of the day.

He was accused of have “killed” the Saints’ football, and if he doesn’t go there will be “no point” signing anyone in January because relegation will be assured.
