Russell Martin: New Rangers team-mate was shocked when arriving at club
New Rangers signing Russell Martin has revealed that even boyhood Gers fan Graham Dorrans has been shocked by how “big” it is playing for the Ibrox giants.
Martin agreed a season-long loan deal from Norwich to become the Gers’ fifth signing of the January transfer window as manager Graeme Murty overhauls the squad he inherited from Pedro Caixinha in October.
The 32-year-old joins Sean Goss, Jamie Murphy and Jason Cummings as the new faces at Ibrox this month while on-loan full-back Declan John completed a permanent switch from Cardiff City.
Martin revealed he had spoken to several of his former Norwich team-mates who had spent time with the Gers – Steven Naismith, Steven Whittaker and Graham Dorrans – about moving to the 54-times Scottish champions.
“I’ve spoken to my old Norwich mates and they all said I won’t realise how big it is until I’m up here but hopefully I’m as prepared as I possibly can be because I’ve spoken to a lot of people and they all told me what a fantastic place it is to come and play – a great club,” Martin said, as quoted by the Daily Record.
“I spoke to Graham (Dorrans) the other day, who has been a fan of the club all his life, and even he was surprised how big it is when you play for Rangers.
“I’m looking forward to it. Even just looking at the number of fans at the games in America and things like that – it’s exciting.”
Martin has been at Carrow Road for almost a decade and has made over 300 appearances for the Canaries.
The veteran has found game-time difficult to come by this season and a move to Ibrox should see Martin feature regularly for Graeme Murty’s side.
The 32-year-old has won 29 caps for Scotland but hasn’t featured for the national team since March 2017.
Martin’s Norwich contract ends in 2019 with the Championship side having an option for an additional year.
