Russell Martin sack latest: O’Rourke shares big update today

Southampton boss Russell Martin is fighting for his job amid ‘massive scrutiny’ from within the boardroom of his club following their dismal start to the season, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that pressure continues to build on the 38-year-old after Southampton suffered yet another defeat against Arsenal last Saturday (October 5).

It’s understood Southampton’s game against fellow newly promoted side Leicester City will be pivotal for Martin’s increasingly precarious chances of keeping his job as the South Coast club remain without a league win so far this season.

The Southampton hierarchy are working on a contingency plan should they decide to finally pull the trigger and relieve Martin of his duties at the club.

Title contenders Arsenal put Martin’s side to the sword, scoring three goals in 30 minutes to secure an impressive 3-1 win.

Despite Martin’s insistence on sticking with the free-flowing football that secured them promotion from the Championship last season, Southampton are the lowest-scoring side in the Premier League with just four goals in their first seven games.

At the back things aren’t much better, only bottom-placed Wolves have conceded more than the newly promoted side, with 21 compared to Southampton’s 15.

After their game against Leicester, Southampton with face current champions Man City and their free-scoring striker Erling Haaland.
